Tools used to make work easier are called simple machines.
Examples of simple tools and their functions

The Six Simple Machines
- Lever: A stiff bar that rests on a support (fulcrum) to lift or move loads, such as a crowbar, seesaw, or scissors.
- Wheel and Axle: A wheel with a rod through its center used to lift or move loads, such as a doorknob, steering wheel, or bicycle wheels.
- Pulley: A wheel with a rope around it, used to move objects up, down, or across, such as in cranes or flagpoles.
- Inclined Plane: A flat, slanting surface that aids in moving objects up or down, such as a ramp or slide.
- Wedge: An object with at least one slanting side, used to cut or spread things apart, such as an axe, knife, or chisel.
- Screw: An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder, used to hold objects together or lift materials, such as a jar lid, bolt, or drill
