CBC Grade 7 Notes What is an artery?
Definition No.1 An artery is a high-pressure, muscular blood vessel that carries oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to tissues and organs. Composed of three layers (tunica intima, media, adventitia), they facilitate circulation and regulate blood pressure by constricting or dilating, with major types including elastic (e.g., aorta) and muscular (e.g., femoral) vessels
Definition No.2 An artery is a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Arteries have thick walls to withstand the high pressure at which the heart pumps the blood. Pushed under pressure, blood cannot flow backwards.
What is the Function of Arteries?
Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to all parts of the body. An exception case is for the pulmonary artery which carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs for purification (to receive oxygen).
