What are Capillaries

What are Capillaries

These are the smallest blood vessels whose walls have tiny holes (pores). They are narrow and thin and form network in every organ and tissue in the body. They are link between veins and arteries.

What is the Function of Capillaries?

Key Notes on Capillaries for Grade 7:
  • Structure: They are microscopic, with a diameter of only 5 to 10  μm, making them finer than human hair. Their thin walls make them highly permeable, allowing substances to pass through easily.
  • Location: They exist in nearly every tissue of the body, creating an extensive, interconnected network.
  • Function:
    • Exchange: They deliver oxygen (O2) and nutrients to cells.
    • Removal: They pick up waste products, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), from cells.
    • Connection: They bridge the gap between the high-pressure artery system and low-pressure vein system.
