CBC Grade 7 Notes in Kenya. Epidermis skin Layer
Structure And Functions Of Skin

Epidermis
This is the upper layer of the skin. It is made up of the dead cells on the top and below is living cells. The living cells contain pigment (colouring) which is different in areas. This colour of the pigment determines the colour of our skin. The cells die to replace the worn out cells.
SMILAR DIFINITION
The epidermis is the thin, outermost layer of the skin that serves as the body’s primary barrier, protecting against environmental hazards, germs, and water loss. It constantly renews itself, sheds dead cells, and provides skin pigment. Key roles include producing keratin, providing UV protection via melanin, and maintaining skin hydration.
What is the Function of Epidermis skin Layer?
Key Aspects and Functions:
- Protection: Shields the body from pathogens, toxins, and radiation.
- Skin Renewal: New skin cells develop in the basal layer and travel upward, replacing older cells every 30 days.
- Hydration: Prevents water loss, maintaining a waterproof seal.
- Color & Sensation: Contains melanocytes (skin pigment) and serves as the primary barrier against the environment
