CBC Grade 7 Notes in Kenya. Dermis skin Layer
Structure And Functions Of Skin
Dermis
This is the lower part of the skin which contains many things.
The dermis is the thick, fibrous middle layer of skin located between the epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis). Primarily composed of collagen and elastic fibers, it provides structural integrity, elasticity, and strength. This layer houses nerves, blood vessels, hair follicles, and glands, facilitating sensation and thermoregulation.
What is the Function of Dermis skin Layer?
Functions of the Dermis
- Support and Structure: Collagen provides strength, while elastin allows for flexibility and recoiling.
- Sensation: Nerve endings within the dermis detect pain, temperature, pressure, and touch.
- Thermoregulation: Blood vessels constrict or dilate to conserve or release heat, while sweat glands produce moisture to cool the body.
- Nourishment and Immunity: Dermal blood vessels supply the epidermis, and its immune cells fight pathogens.
- Hair and Oil Production: Houses hair follicles and sebaceous glands, which secrete sebum to hydrate the skin
